Review The Secret of Chimneys

Oh my goodness, I just finished "The Secret of Chimneys" (the annotated edition, mind you!), and I'm still reeling! Agatha Christie, as always, is a master of suspense. I thought I had it all figured out – you know, that satisfying feeling of thinking you've cracked the case before the detective even gets close – but then bam! Christie throws in a twist so unexpected, so cleverly woven into the narrative, that it left me utterly speechless. It’s that brilliant plotting that makes her books such enduring classics.

This one leaned more into the thriller aspect than some of her other murder mysteries, which I actually appreciated. The pacing was fantastic; the constant unraveling of the conspiracy kept me hooked from beginning to end. The characters, as always with Christie, were richly drawn, a colorful cast of aristocrats, spies, and shadowy figures, each with their own secrets and agendas. Trying to figure out who to trust was half the fun! I found myself constantly second-guessing everyone, questioning their motives, and that’s exactly what a good mystery should do. It kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering who would be the next victim, or even the next perpetrator.

Now, let's talk about the "annotated" edition. That's where things get a little… interesting. I was expecting something more akin to a classic annotated novel, with footnotes and explanations throughout the text adding context and depth to the story. Instead, this edition presented a surprise! The large format (I'm talking seriously oversized – 8x11 inches!), while initially shocking, turned out to be surprisingly useful for my purposes. I'm actually using this book for research, and the large pages make it incredibly easy to highlight quotes and add my own notes in the margins. So, while not what I anticipated in terms of annotations, it has become a surprisingly functional research tool.

The book itself was printed on demand; I was quite surprised to see the print date on the last page, just a couple of days before I received it. There are also black and white illustrations scattered throughout – some related to the story, others seemingly random photos connected to Agatha Christie herself. It's a bit quirky, but adds a certain charm. A single page at the end labeled "Additional Information" rounded out the annotations. While perhaps not the robust annotations I’d hoped for, the unique presentation made the experience memorable. I’ve heard complaints from others who received this book on Kindle, and found it lacked these illustrations and additional page, which is disappointing. It clearly highlights the importance of understanding precisely what you're purchasing when ordering an "annotated" edition. In my case, even with the unexpected format, the oversized pages and the Christie quality story make it a worthwhile addition to my bookshelf, albeit a surprisingly bulky one!
